The NGO Women in Media has received an invitation to join the Media Alliance on Artificial Intelligence — a collaborative platform bringing together stakeholders from Ukraine’s media sector to discuss approaches to the responsible use of AI, contribute to the development of regulatory policies, exchange expertise, and develop practical recommendations for the industry.

The invitation was extended by Alliance Coordinator Dmytro Sholomko. In his letter, he acknowledged Women in Media’s active work in the field of artificial intelligence and invited the organization to contribute to the Alliance’s efforts to promote responsible approaches to the use of emerging technologies in the media sector.

The Alliance was established in May 2026 at the initiative of Suspilne Media. Its current members include the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency, NV, 1+1 Media, Starlight Media, Ukrainska Pravda, Espreso, Livyi Bereh, the Institute of Mass Information, and Detector Media. Representatives of Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation have also joined the Alliance’s discussions on the future interaction between the state and the media sector in the field of artificial intelligence, contributing to the dialogue on the development of AI-related policies and practices.

The Alliance aims to establish transparent rules for the use of artificial intelligence in Ukraine’s media sector, protect copyright, promote the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, and strengthen the resilience of the information environment.

The Alliance is being established as a cross-sector platform for dialogue among media organizations, OTT platforms, telecommunications providers, and technology companies. Its participants will work to align approaches to the use of media content for training artificial intelligence models, develop content verification mechanisms, exchange expertise, and coordinate responses to cases of disinformation.

For several years, the NGO Women in Media has been systematically working on issues related to artificial intelligence and its impact on journalism, human rights, and the safety of women journalists. The organization researches cases of technology-facilitated gender-based online violence, including forms amplified by AI, conducts advocacy activities, and develops practical tools and guidance for newsrooms.

In particular, in partnership with the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Women in Media is implementing a project that supports newsrooms in adopting the responsible use of artificial intelligence. As part of the project, the organization developed a Model AI Policy for Newsrooms as a public-facing document, as well as Guidelines for the Use of AI as an internal document for editorial teams.

In addition to its research and advocacy efforts, Women in Media provides training for journalists on the use of artificial intelligence in media work.

In December 2025, the organization, together with the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting and the Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy, in partnership with UNESCO and with the support of the Government of Japan, organized the webinar “Artificial Intelligence in Media Practice: Data Journalism, Editorial Policies, and Safety.”

The webinar brought together 168 participants. This strong level of engagement demonstrates the growing relevance of artificial intelligence for the media sector and highlights the significant interest of media professionals in the practical application of AI, newsroom policies, and digital safety.

“We are grateful for the invitation to join the Media Alliance on Artificial Intelligence. It is important for us that the implementation of AI in media is responsible, transparent, and grounded in human rights and gender equality. We see significant potential in the Alliance as a platform for professional dialogue, experience sharing, and the joint development of solutions,” said Liza Kuzmenko, Head of the NGO Women in Media.

Background

In 2025, Women in Media, in cooperation with UNESCO and with the support of the Government of Japan, presented the study “When AI Turns Hostile: Gendered Threats Against Ukrainian Women Journalists,” which focuses on cases of technology-facilitated violence amplified by artificial intelligence.

Women in Media, in cooperation with TEXTY.org.ua, also conducted an investigation titled “AI and TikTok: How Prominent Ukrainian Women Journalists Are Used in Hidden AI-Generated Content,” which identified hundreds of videos with signs of generative AI use and millions of views of such content.

For several years, Women in Media has maintained a Database of Online Attacks Against Women Journalists, which includes a dedicated section on AI-enabled attacks. To date, it documents and systematizes more than 20 cases.

This work is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands under the project “Strengthening the Resilience of Women Journalists in Ukraine: Countering Online Violence and Gender Disinformation.”
