On July 20, 2025, the YouTube channel “News of Ukraine” published a video from the website “Zakhid Media” titled: “Russia Tries to Destabilize Zakarpattia Using Pseudo-Environmentalists | Zakhid Media.” The video alleges that “Russia is trying to destabilize the situation in Zakarpattia through pseudo-environmentalists Olena Mudra, Oksana Stankevych-Volosyanchuk, Nataliia Maistrenko (Hnes), Nataliia Vyshnevska, Oleh Luksha, and Valentyna Nepyipova (STS Corporation).”

The report portrays journalist Olena Mudra not as an independent professional, but as part of a group allegedly obstructing a “patriotic” energy project. It suggests ties to Western grants of supposed Russian origin, creating a false image of an “enemy of progress” acting against Ukraine’s interests.

Key claims made in the video:

  • A conflict is unfolding in Zakarpattia over a green energy project: the construction of wind farms on the Runa mountain range.
  • This project is part of a national program to strengthen energy security in the region and across Ukraine, considering Zakarpattia’s low self-sufficiency rate (only 20% of its energy needs).
  • A group of local activists, including journalist Olena Mudra, Associate Professor Oksana Stankevych-Volosyanchuk, a lawyer, and others, are blocking the project, citing environmental risks.
  • The video accuses these activists of manipulations, filing numerous complaints with courts and authorities, and hints at possible funding from organizations allegedly connected to Russia.
  • It emphasizes that Runa does not currently have official protected status, only a pending nomination to the Emerald Network.
  • The NGO “Ecological Faita” has appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate the activists’ funding and motivations.
  • The development of wind energy is framed as a matter of national security, especially during wartime.

Important considerations:

  • The video has a one-sided, pro-investor tone.
  • Activists are named and accused without evidence of ties to Russia.
  • The piece shows signs of discrediting environmental activism and may be commissioned content (e.g., claims of “Russian roots” of grants, derogatory phrases like “unemployed woman from Kyiv”).
  • No position from the activists or independent environmental experts is included.

Additionally, there is a high likelihood that the presenter in the video was created or altered using AI technologies such as generative video or deepfake. It is likely a virtual host rather than a real person, with a simulated face and voice.

Visual indicators suggesting possible AI use:

Unnatural facial expressions and muscle movement

  • The host’s face appears overly smooth and symmetrical, lacking natural skin texture or micro-expressions.
  • The mouth movements are limited, appearing as if “pasted” onto a template.

Eye and gaze anomalies

  • In several frames, the eyes appear to “float” in space, lacking natural blinking and failing to focus properly.
  • The video likely uses template-based facial animation or a generative synthetic model.

Hair and neck/shoulder alignment

  • The hair appears unnaturally sharp and “cut out,” typical in videos where a face is overlaid onto a static background.
  • The neck and background lines are sometimes too sharp or misaligned, a common deepfake indicator.

Background and lighting

  • The background appears artificial or generated, lacking depth and interaction with facial lighting.
  • Lighting on the face and background does not always match.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time AI-generated characters have been used in attacks against journalist Olena Mudra.
