Ukrainska Pravda Published Its Gender Equality Policy

15.12.2024

Ukrainska Pravda has taken an important step towards ensuring gender equality in the media space by publishing its gender equality policy. This step is the part of the editorial’s commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability in its operations, fostering greater trust with its audience.

Andrii Bystrov,Program Director at Ukrainska Pravdanoted in his comment to Women in Media: “Updating gender equality policies for Ukrainska Pravda content is both a response to contemporary challenges and a fundamental necessity for meaningful engagement with our audiences. As a leading Ukrainian online media outlet, we guarantee our readers balance, diversity of voices, non-discrimination, and inclusivity in our materials.”

Liza Kuzmenko, head of Women in Media, emphasized that an increasing number of Ukrainian editorial offices are making their policies public, including gender equality policies. For such media outlets, this is a crucial step toward transparency, building audience trust, and sending a strong message to partners.

“However, adopting a policy is just the first step. It is essential to conduct self-assessments of content, monitor gender balance, and ensure the use of feminatives. For example, Suspilne monitors gender equality using the BBC’s 50:50 standard. It is also important to organize regular training sessions and awareness-raising events. Recently, Women in Media hosted a webinar supported by UNESCO on reporting domestic violence and avoiding stereotypes. The event attracted 150 journalists from across Ukraine, demonstrating significant interest in the topic and highlighting the growing sensitivity of Ukrainian journalism to such issues,” said Liza Kuzmenko.

The policy of Ukrainska Pravda is adapted based on recommendations from the Women in Media NGO and the Commission on Journalistic Ethics, with support from the OSCE Support Program for Ukraine. The gender equality policy is available for download at the following link.

It is worth reminding that Kyiv24, Channel 5, and Espreso have recently updated their gender equality policies.
