Ukrainian Translation of the OSCE Guidelines for Monitoring Online Violence Against Female Journalists Now Available

27.09.2024

Women in Media NGO has initiated the translation of the “Guidelines for Monitoring Online Violence against Female Journalists” into Ukrainian. These guidelines were originally developed by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media as a practical tool for effectively responding to online threats faced by women in the media.

The document contains specific steps for monitoring, collecting, and analyzing data on online attacks, as well as recommendations on how to prevent and combat violence targeting female journalists. The Ukrainian translation, supported by the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine, aims to improve the safety of female journalists in Ukraine and raise awareness about the methods for countering online violence at the national level.

The translated guidelines will be of value to media organizations, social media platforms, and other stakeholders who play a role in ensuring the protection of female journalists in the digital space.

Background: According to research published by UNESCO and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), nearly three quarters (73%) of 714 international female journalists surveyed in late 2020 said that they had experienced online violence in the course of their work. More alarmingly, 20% of them indicated that they had experienced offline attacks and abuse that they believed had been seeded online. This makes the availability of such resources in Ukraine particularly relevant and timely.
