Open call for media: pilot of an ethical AI use policy in newsrooms

23.04.2026

The NGO Women in Media, in partnership with Reporters Without Borders (RSF), is launching an open call for Ukrainian media outlets to take part in piloting a model policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), developed within this project.

The goal of the initiative is to support newsrooms in using AI in a way that is ethical, responsible, and gender-sensitive — both in journalism and in internal workflows.

This is a chance for newsrooms not to start from scratch when developing AI guidelines.
Instead, participants will get a practical foundation, expert support, and ready-to-use tools to adapt the policy to their daily work. This will help organise internal processes, reduce the risk of mistakes, unclear use of AI, privacy violations, and discriminatory practices — and strengthen trust among audiences, partners, and donors.

As part of the project, at least 5 media outlets will be selected. They will receive expert support and will be among the first to test and adapt the model AI policy to their newsroom practice. They will also receive a practical guide on how to use AI in editorial workflows.

Who can apply

We invite:

  • national, regional, and local media, including small independent newsrooms;
  • media outlets that do not yet have AI policies or are just starting to develop them;
  • teams already using digital tools or facing challenges such as online attacks, disinformation, or other digital risks;
  • teams that share the principles of gender equality and are ready to integrate gender-sensitive approaches into their editorial and organisational policies.

Selection process

Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee participation.

We will pay particular attention to:

  • geographic diversity;
  • work with vulnerable or underrepresented groups;
  • the newsroom’s motivation to implement the policy and integrate gender-sensitive approaches;
  • whether the policy can realistically be applied in daily work.

What selected media will receive

  • access to a model AI policy adapted to the Ukrainian context;
  • hands-on support from experts to tailor and implement it;
  • a clear understanding of how to use AI in editorial work;
  • an opportunity to contribute to shaping responsible AI practices in Ukrainian media.

Why this matters

As AI develops rapidly and risks linked to technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) grow, media need clear guidance: how to use AI tools without harming their audience, how to avoid reinforcing discrimination, how to protect journalists, and how to maintain editorial responsibility and trust.

Having an AI policy is not just an internal document. It also signals to audiences, donors, and partners that a newsroom takes a responsible approach to new technologies.

If your newsroom wants to use AI in a responsible, transparent, and safe way — we invite you to apply.
