On June 23, as part of the international media conference Global Media Forum organized by Deutsche Welle, a panel discussion titled “Who carries the crisis? The gendered cost of wartime journalism” will take place.

During the discussion, participants will focus on how Ukrainian media operate under conditions of full-scale war and how these circumstances affect women and men in the media sector differently. Particular attention will be paid to the fact that women, who make up a significant part of the media community, often take on a larger share of invisible work, assume crisis-related tasks, and face increasing risks both online and in real life.

The discussion will also cover issues of gender equality, leadership, and the transformation of journalistic practices in wartime, as well as broader structural challenges faced by media institutions. It will also explore how women are currently influencing changes in approaches to journalism in Ukraine.

Speakers: Liza Kuzmenko (Women in Media), Mariya Frey (Suspilne Ukraine), Olha Syrotiuk, (European Centre for Press and Media Freedom), Inna Varenytsia (War Correspondent and Documentary Filmmaker).

More information about the event is available at the link below. Language: English. After the panel, the NGO “Women in Media” will prepare a summary of the key takeaways from the discussion.

This panel is held within the Voices of Ukraine / SAFE programme, coordinated by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF). Voices of Ukraine / SAFE is implemented under the Hannah Arendt Initiative and supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
