Recommendations for Media Coverage of Gender Equality, Violence Prevention, Sexism and Gender Stereotypes

This practical tool helps media professionals cover gender-related issues in a professional, sensitive, and non-discriminatory manner. The recommendations address gender equality, violence prevention, sexism, and gender stereotyping in media content. The document was developed by Women in Media NGO, taking into account proposals from the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine and the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, and was approved by an order of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

The tool can be useful to anyone involved in creating and distributing media content, including journalists, editors, producers, and media organizations seeking to improve their editorial standards. The recommendations encourage media professionals to consider how women and men are represented in their content, how to address sensitive topics, and how to avoid language and approaches that may reinforce inequality, sexism, or gender stereotypes.

The document can also serve as a basis for developing or updating internal editorial standards and policies and for training newsroom teams in gender-sensitive journalism. The recommendations aim to support the creation of media content based on the principles of equality and non-discrimination.
